# What is LumiDB

LumiDB is a platform for exploring and working with massive 3D point cloud datasets directly in the browser. It eliminates the need for manual file merging, filtering, optimization, or heavy desktop applications. LumiDB offers scalable access, visualization, and export to external tools.

At its core, LumiDB is a database system purpose-built for point cloud data, with full API access for integrating and managing datasets. This makes it a true single source of truth—organizations can store all their data in one place and connect their tools directly to it.

**Who it's for**

LumiDB is built for professionals and organizations working with geospatial and 3D data:

* Surveying and mapping teams
* Urban planning and infrastructure projects
* Groups needing fast, collaborative access to point clouds
* Developers building applications on top of point cloud data

**Why it exists**

Traditional point cloud tools rely on downloading large files, local processing, and manual merging before analysis. The process is slow, resource-intensive, and difficult to share.

LumiDB solves this by progressively streaming point clouds to the browser and treating all files as a unified dataset. This enables users to:

* Explore large areas instantly
* Filter and refine data for analysis
* Export subsets in standard formats for further use
* Share views or clipped datasets with colleagues easily


# LumiDB in brief

LumiDB lets you view, crop, filter, and export massive point cloud datasets directly in the browser. This article introduces the core features.

### **Browse datasets**

Click the *View datasets* icon in the top-left corner to see all datasets in your system. Each row represents a dataset and includes:

1. a color code
2. the dataset name
3. a button to center the view on the dataset
4. a button to hide or show the dataset

Hover over a dataset name to see its location on the map.\

### **Navigate to an area**

Pan and zoom the map with your mouse to reach the area you're interested in.

### **Select an area**

Click the *Crop* tool and draw a polygon on the map. Adjust the corners to refine the selection.<br>

### **Filter content**

Open the *Filters* menu to hide elements such as buildings or vegetation.

# Account management

This article covers signing in to LumiDB and managing basic settings. LumiDB supports secure, organization-based login, passwordless email login, and traditional username and password authentication.

### **Sign in**

Go to <https://app.lumidb.com> in your browser.

### **Choose a login method**

You can sign in using:

* Google credentials
* Microsoft Entra ID via your organization
* Email: enter your address to receive a one-time login link
* Username and password

### **Authenticate securely**

Google or Microsoft sign-in redirects you to your organization’s login page.

For email login, you’ll receive a one-time link—no password required.

### **Access the interface**

After successful login, you'll be directed to the LumiDB main interface.

### **Update profile settings**

Click your profile icon to view your session, manage organization settings (if you have access), or log out.

# Interface overview

This guide introduces the main parts of the LumiDB interface.

### **Top navigation**

* **Home button (top left):** Clears all selections.
* **Share button:** Generates a shareable link to the current view.
* **User menu (top right, circle icon):** Manage your account, add a profile picture, or set a password.

### **Side navigation**

The left-hand sidebar includes the following tools:

* **View datasets:** Displays all datasets on your account. Select which ones appear on the map.
* **Filters:** Filter data by classification or elevation.
* **Display options:** Adjust coloring, point size, and render quality.
* **Measure:** Measure distances, paths, and surface areas.
* **Crop:** Define a map area to isolate part of a dataset. Cropped areas can be exported or shared.
* **Compare datasets:** Compare two datasets side by side. First select the base dataset, then the one to compare.
* **Upload data:** Available only to users with editor or admin roles. Upload new datasets to the system.
* **Reset camera:** Resets the view to its default position.

### **Bottom bar**

The bottom of the screen lists all datasets currently selected for visualization.

# Camera and navigation

This guide explains how mouse controls work in LumiDB’s visualization view.

### **Zoom**

Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out.

Zooming centers on the point under your cursor, so position the pointer over the area of interest before scrolling

### **Pan**

Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag to move the view.

### **Rotate**

Click and hold the right mouse button, then move the mouse to rotate the camera around the current focus point.

# Browsing datasets

This article explains how to browse datasets in LumiDB.

### Open the dataset list

Go to the list view to see all datasets in a table. Each row shows the dataset’s assigned color, its name, and buttons to center the view or hide/show the dataset.

Click a dataset name to reveal its metadata.

### Select datasets to visualize

Use the checkboxes to include or exclude individual datasets. Click Clear to remove all selections. Use the filter icon to search by keyword.

### Visualize selected datasets in 3D

Explore the data by zooming in on the map. As you zoom, LumiDB progressively streams higher-resolution data.

### Adjust resolution level

Set the maximum resolution level from the Display options menu.

# Merging, cropping, and filtering datasets

This guide explains how to merge multiple datasets and their internal tiles, crop a region for analysis, and apply classification-based filters before exporting to a file.

### **Merging**

Point cloud datasets often consist of multiple tiles. Traditionally, these tiles must be merged manually in separate software. In LumiDB, dataset and tile boundaries are abstracted, allowing you to view them as a unified dataset directly in the browser.

Merging happens automatically. All datasets selected from the Datasets menu are combined for visualization, including their internal tiles.

### Cropping

1. Navigate to the area of interest on the map.
2. Use the Crop tool to draw a polygon around the area.
3. Adjust the polygon by dragging its corners.
4. The cropped area is previewed immediately in the visualization view.

### Remove cropping

1. Click any corner of the cropped area to open the Area crop panel.
2. Click Clear to remove the crop.

### **Filtering**

1. Open the *Filters* menu. The colors update to reflect classification data.
2. Use classification filters to refine the visible data, for example, to hide water or unclassified points.

### **Export to file**

Once cropping and filtering are complete:

1. Open the Export menu from the *Area crop* panel.
2. Export the cropped and filtered dataset in standard formats such as LAZ or E57, or download the original tile files separately.
3. You can also share the dataset as a link with colleagues or as 3D Tiles for use in supported applications.


# Importing data

In LumiDB, only users with Editor or Admin roles can import new datasets. This restriction ensures consistent data quality, structure, and access control across the system.

### Viewer users

If you’re a Viewer, the import option will be disabled. To make new data available in LumiDB:

1. Contact your organization’s Editor or Admin.
2. Provide the dataset along with relevant details such as coordinate system and intended use.
3. After approval and upload, the dataset will appear in your list.

### Editor and Admin users

If you have Editor or Admin access, follow these steps to import a dataset:

1. Open the *Upload data* menu.
2. Enter a name for the new dataset. If you reuse an existing name, it will be overwritten.
3. Fill in the *Attribution* field with the data provider’s name.
4. Specify the correct projection in the *Input projection* field. Only EPSG:#### formats are currently supported. For other formats, use the API.
5. To reproject the data, enter the target projection in the *Table projection* field (also in EPSG:#### format).
6. Drag and drop files or select them in the *Files (.laz)* field. Currently, only LAZ format is supported through the viewer.
7. Click *Upload* to start the process. This will initiate the file upload sequence.

# Link sharing and collaboration

Sharing is available in three areas of the LumiDB interface, and works the same way in each:

1. The *Share* button in the top bar
2. After completing a measurement in any measurement tool (Distance, Path, or Area)
3. After cropping an area in the *Area crop* panel

LumiDB supports two main methods for sharing: link sharing and 3D Tiles export. Both require the recipient to have an existing LumiDB account.

### Link sharing

1. Share the current view as a link.
2. Includes all active crops, filters, and selections
3. Preserves all measurements
4. Colleagues can open the exact same view in their browser

### 3D Tiles sharing

1. Export and share the dataset, or a cropped portion, in 3D Tiles format.
2. Can be used in external applications that support Cesium 3D Tiles
3. Enables interactive visualization outside of LumiDB


# Cesium 3D Tileset export

This guide explains how to stream point cloud data from LumiDB into any software that supports Cesium 3D Tileset streaming.

### **Get 3D Tileset URL for full datasets**

1. In the *Datasets* menu, select the datasets you want to export

2. From the top menu, click *Share* and then *Copy tileset URL*. This copies the tileset link to your clipboard.
3. Save the link for later use or paste it directly into your target software by following instructions in [#streaming-in-external-software](#streaming-in-external-software "mention").

### **Get 3D Tileset URL for filtered or cropped datasets**

1. Follow the instructions in [Merging, cropping, and filtering datasets](/user-guides/merging-cropping-and-filtering-datasets).&#x20;

2. In the *Area crop* panel, click *Share* and then *Copy tileset URL*. The link will be copied to your clipboard for use in external tools. Follow instructions in [#streaming-in-external-software](#streaming-in-external-software "mention").

### **Streaming in external software**

LumiDB supports point cloud streaming into any application that supports Cesium 3D Tilesets. To enable this, you'll need a personal API key for authentication. Contact <support@lumidb.com>\
to request your key.

This example uses the [6DPlanner](https://www.6dplanner.com/) software.

1. In 6DPlanner, open *Data Tree* → *Add datasets*.
2. Select the *Tiles* option.

3. Required fields:
   1. **Linkki:** Paste the 3D Tileset URL copied earlier
   2. **Käyttäjänimi:** Use `apikey`
   3. **Salasana:** Enter your personal API key
4. Click *Add dataset* to start streaming.

*Note:* In 6DPlanner, the *Name* and *Resolution multiplier* fields are specific to the application. Refer to 6DPlanner documentation for recommended values.

# Visualization modes, display settings, and performance

Visualization settings are found in the *Display options* menu. These control how point clouds are rendered in LumiDB—including color mode, point size, and level of detail.

### Color mode

Choose how points are colored:

* **RGB:** Uses the dataset’s original color values
* **Classification:** Colors points based on class (e.g., ground, buildings, vegetation)
* **Intensity:** Based on the sensor’s return intensity
* **Point source ID:** Highlights points by scan line
* **File:** Colors points based on the original file
* **Dataset:** Colors points by dataset when multiple are visible
* **Extra data / Picking:** Internal modes not required for normal use

### Point size

Controls how large individual points appear. Larger points help interpret sparse data; smaller points preserve detail in dense datasets.

### Level of detail

Adjusts rendering quality, performance, and memory usage:

* **Low:** Optimized for speed and minimal memory
* **Medium:** Balanced for most use cases
* **High:** Full resolution with higher GPU and memory demands

Choose a setting that fits your hardware and analysis needs.

# Cross section tool

This article shows how the cross section tool can be used to project sections of the data to 2D and how to take measurements with them.

1. Open the cross section tool from the left hand side menu. It opens the cross section pane at the bottom and activates the line section measurement tool.
2. Click the 3D view first to select the start point and then the end point for the cross section. Observe the geometry between these two points being shown in the cross section pane.
3. Use *Flip* to change the start and end points of the cross section, effectively to flip the 2D view across the up axis.
4. To get more or less points visible on the 2D pane, adjust the depth. This will collect points from wider volume on both sides of the line that was drawn.
5. Select the *Measure* tool in the cross section pane to do a line measurement on the 2D pane.
   1. You can use the grid lines to get a straight vertical or horizontal measurement.
   2. If you place the two measurement points at an angle, you will get both the horizontal and vertical measurements, as well as the direct distance measurement.
   3. To clear the measurements, click *Clear* on the 2D pane
6. To clear the entire cross section view, click *Clear* on the top right corner Distance measurement window.


# FAQ

<details>

<summary>Why is the dataset quality low? The view shows large gaps.</summary>

1. A slow network connection may prevent progressive streaming from updating the view quickly. Check the streaming indicator at the bottom of the left sidebar to see if data is still loading.
2. The dataset may not have been uploaded or stored at full resolution. Contact your admin to request higher-resolution data.
3. Active filters may be hiding parts of the dataset.
